There is no fixing the choices I've made. All I can do is embrace who I am, what I've become, until I become nothing at all. And then I will embrace myself even more.

☇ In an imaginary world where Xerxes Break never was, a young boy named Gilbert (just Gilbert) spent the hours and days after watching his young master fall into the Abyss crying by himself in the forest. No one disturbed him and no one came. No one ever offered him the hope that he would ever see his master again.

Within the Vessalius household, he became superfluous without the person he was meant to serve, and no one would listen to his wild stories of what truly happened that day of the ceremony. The days passed into weeks, then months, and every day Gilbert was told that his memories were distorted, were imagined, were the products of trauma and shock. But they were so real and vivid that Gilbert couldn't let them go. As time passed, the other members of the household grew wary of him, then afraid. They gave him wide berth as he passed through the estate, and the Vessalius family only continued to provide for him due to some vague sense of obligation to their deceased heir.

Vincent Nightray, meanwhile, never did give up his search for his lost brother, and one day heard rumor of the dark-haired boy with yellow eyes who the Vessalius were all but keeping in their basement. Prolonged isolation and self-loathing had turned Gilbert into a shadow of a boy by the time the Nightrays took him in. Couldn't look anyone in the eye, couldn't function more than nodding to yes or no questions. (He never shook his head, because that might displease someone. Best just to nod, best just to tell them what they wanted to hear.)

"It's okay, brother. We're together again. Everything will be fine now, I'm sure of it. Anything you want, it's yours."

Gilbert took to Vincent as a lifeline and soon grew into life as a Nightray in its entirety. Once he contracted the Raven, he adopted his Chain's name as an alias and turned his back on everything he used to be.

Of course, not all could remain well in this Hellish version of Paradise. Once the Headhunter started taking heads again, Raven began to fear for his own and decided it was time to put the last of his affairs in order. He let himself into the Abyss in search of Oz, even if returning him to the surface world was all he could do.

Alas, not ten minutes in did he allow himself to be ambushed, shattering his contract mirror. Contract with the Raven lost, Raven was stranded within the Abyss himself... until he heard a very peculiar voice out of the darkness.

"May I ask you a terribly important question, good sir?"

And so began the deadly courtship between the Raven and the Mad Hatter.
